Erect annual to perennial herbs; sap milky. Leaves opposite, with minute glands at base of lamina, petiolate or more or less sessile. Inflorescences umbelliform. Flowers pedicellate; sepals with minute glands inside at base; corolla campanulate to rotate, tube cylindrical, lobes twisted, reflexed, spreading or erect, free at tips, valvate in bud; corona of 5 segments fused to staminal column at base and lower part of corolla-tube, forming a connivent tube around staminal column; pollinia 2 per anther, pendent; style head conical-elongate. Follicles fusiform. Seeds with coma.
c. 130 species from Central and South America; 1 species naturalised in Australia.
