There are 3 subspecies, with only E. cinerea subsp. victoriensis occurring naturally in Victoria. Eucalyptus cinerea subsp. cinerea is commonly planted in Victoria but, to date, has not been reported as becoming naturalised in this State. It differs from E. cinerea subsp. victoriensisin being a smaller tree with a canopy consisting of entirely opposite ('juvenile') leaves.
