Trees or shrubs. Leaves bipinnate; stipules spinescent (in Victoria). Inflorescence a pedunculate, axillary spike or spike-like raceme. Flowers numerous, greenish-yellow; sepals 5, united; petals 5, united below middle; stamens 10, free. Pod linear, usually somewhat monilifom, compressed, thick, not dehiscent; seeds compressed-ovoid.
About 40 species, in warmer parts of North and South America, Asia and Africa; at least 5 species naturalised in Australia.
