Non-stoloniferous, annual, biennial or perennial herbs with cottony hairs. Leaves alternate, sessile, entire. Inflorescence of corymbose, paniculate or cymose clusters of capitula without subtending leaves. Capitula heterogamous, disciform, in small clusters. Involucral bracts in 3 or 4 series, more or less equal in length, lacking petaloid laminae, scarious, entirely white or yellow, shining, innermost bracts with prominent greenish midrib. Receptacle flat, ebracteate. Florets all tubular; outer florets in 2–4 rows, filiform, female; inner florets bisexual, 4- or 5-lobed, fewer than female florets, anthers tailed, style branches truncate. Cypselas short, terete, with sparse, mucilage-producing papillae; pappus of barbellate hairs, ciliate at base, usually falling in small groups.
