2 subspecies, with Baloskion tetraphyllum subsp. tertraphyllum throughout south-east Australia and Baloskion tetraphyllum subsp. meiostachyus L.A.S.Johnson & O.D.Evans from south-east Queensland to south-east New South Wales within 10 km of the Victorian border. Baloskion tetraphyllum subsp. meiostachyus differs from Baloskion tetraphyllum subsp. tetraphyllum by its shorter female and male spikelets that are 3.5–6 mm long and 2.5–5 mm long respectively and by its shorter female and male glumes that are 2.5–3.6 mm long and 1–2 mm long respectively.
