There are two subspecies, but only Lachnagrostis rudis subsp. rudis occurs in Victoria: see profile under that name. Lachnagrostis rudis subsp. nana A.J.Br. is overall a smaller plant (to 20 cm high) with spikelets no more than 1.6 mm long. It is currently known only from Flinders Island in Bass Strait.
