Lachnagrostis
Tufted annuals or perennials. Ligule membranous. Culms with glabrous nodes, usually disarticulating at maturity below the lowest branch of the inflorescence which usually remains entire and becomes wind-dispersed. Inflorescence a loose panicle. Spikelets 1-flowered; glumes 2, persistent, subequal, exceeding lemma, 1-nerved, keeled; rachilla developed, from c. one-quarter lemma length to as long as lemma, glabrous or hairy; lemma 5-nerved, membranous, truncate, often with the lateral veins exserted; awn dorsal, usually geniculate and twisted below the bend; palea at least half as long as lemma.
About 30 species from S. Africa, S. America, New Zealand and Australia (ca. 25 species); 12 described for Victoria, but genus is under study and further species are likely to be recognised.
