Tufted glabrous annuals. Leaf-blades flat, inrolled when dry; ligules membranous. Inflorescence a stiff, few-branched panicle or raceme. Spikelets 5–20-flowered; glumes 2, firm, keeled, subequal, 1–3-nerved, persistent; lemma 5-nerved, obtuse or emarginate, sometimes mucronate, hardened at maturity; palea subequal to lemma.
2 European species, mostly occurring in dry habitats, both naturalised in Australia and Victoria.
