Lemma awnless; body of lemma glabrous and callus glabrous. Flowers Nov.–Feb.

*CVU, *DunT, *EGL, *EGU, *GipP, *Gold, *HNF, *HSF, *NIS, *OtP, *Strz, *VAlp, *VRiv, *VVP, *WaP. Naturalised in all States except NT, Qld. Native throughout Europe and temperate Asia, widely naturalised. Occurs widely in cooler, high-rainfall areas of the State, often abundant along roadsides and in pasture (but not a particularly valuable pasture species). Occasionally used in seed mixes for soil stabilisation, particularly in the alps.
