Ranunculus collinus
R.Br. ex DC. Strawberry ButtercupStoloniferous perennial to c. 20 cm high. Leaves tufted at base; petioles 2–15 cm long; lamina 3-lobed, 3–40 mm long and wide, wholly glabrous or with scattered hairs, segments c. cuneate, variably toothed or the middle segment further lobed to c. midway. Flowering stems shortly exceeding leaves, 1(–2)-flowered; sepals 4–6, spreading, broadly elliptic to obovate, c. 3 mm long, pilose; petals 5–11, oblong to narrowly obovate, 5–10 mm long, 2–3 mm wide, yellow, glossy; nectary attached near base, lobe semicircular or crescentic, the lateral margins fused to petal and forming a small pouch, 0.2–0.5 mm long overall; stamens c. 25–40. Achenes 8–15, broadly ellipsoid, c. 2.5 mm long, usually with 2–3 oblique low ridges on each face; beak 0.5–1 mm long, recurved; receptacle sparsely hispid between achenes, glabrous or almost so in the staminal zone. Flowers Nov.–Jan.
EGU, HSF, HNF, MonT, HFE, VAlp. Also NSW, ACT, Tas. Virtually restricted to damp, shaded sites and Sphagnum mossbeds in the alps and subalps, but locally rather common (e.g. Baw Baws, Snowy Range, Nunniong Plateau, Wulgulmerang areas).
