Annual or perennial herbs or subshrubs. Leaves cauline, alternate, 1- or 2-pinnatisect. Capitula radiate or discoid, solitary or in terminal panicles; involucral bracts many-seriate, margins of outer bracts scarious, apex of inner bracts scarious, herbaceous; receptacle flat or convex, scaly. Ray florets neuter or female, sterile or fertile, 1-seriate, ligulate; disc florets bisexual, fertile or functionally male, tubular; corolla 5-lobed; anthers obtuse at base; style bilobed or those of the inner florets not, branches oblong, penicillate. Cypselas obovoid or turbinate, ribbed, glabrous or sometimes with a basal coma; pappus of 5 or 6 scales or also with an additional series of 4–5 bristles or more slender scales.
38 species mostly from South Africa but also from Namibia, Botswana and Ethiopia; 2 species naturalized in Australia.
