Dendrobium speciosum is extremely variable over its Australian range, various treatments recognise between 5 and 9 more or less distinct varieties (many of which were raised to species by Clements 1989), characterized by flower size and colour, and pseudobulb size and shape. The Victorian material is all referable to D. speciosum var. speciosum.
