Tufted annuals or perennials. Ligule membranous, sometimes fringed. Inflorescence a panicle of short racemes in clusters, each raceme subtended by a leafy bract or spathe; racemes of an involucre of 4 sessile or shortly pedicellate, male or sterile spikelets with a terminal triplet of a bisexual, sessile spikelet and a pair of shortly pedicellate male or sterile spikelets; involucre persisting on culm after maturity, the terminal triplet falling entire or its component spikelets separating at maturity; glumes subequal, the lower 7–11-nerved, the upper 1–5-nerved; male or sterile spikelets unawned, with a membranous lemma, palea absent; lower lemma of fertile spikelets sterile, unawned, membranous, upper lemma fertile, membranous, awned; palea sometimes lacking.
