Leaves rosetted; blades ovate to lanceolate, 10–40 mm long, 5–18 mm wide, acute or obtuse at apex, hastate or sagittate at base with 2 linear lobes 5–25 mm long inflexed and lying almost against the upper surface of the blade; petioles fleshy, 2–10 cm long, with membranous, broadly sheathing margins toward the base. Flowers solitary, sweet-scented, virtually sessile within leaves, very variable, 2–6.5 cm diam., tepals usually 5(–8), oblong to ovate, white or pink, usually veined darker; stamens c. 15–25, filaments flattened, c. 3–10 mm long; carpels mostly 5–15. Fruiting follicles shortly beaked, radiating in a head 15–20 mm diam., fruiting peduncle thick and fleshy, elongating to c. 10(–20) cm long; follicles 1–5-seeded, opening dorsally; seeds c. ovoid, 1–1.5 mm long, smooth and pale brown. Flowers Nov.–Jan.
NIS, HSF, HNF, VAlp. Locally common in areas of late-lying snow and in moss-beds on the higher ranges (Baw Baws, Snowy Range, Mt Buffalo, Bogong and Dargo High Plains), but apparently absent from the Cobberas. Usually flowering at edges of receding snow-drifts.
