Tufted or stoloniferous annuals or perennials. Leaf-blades various; ligules membranous. Inflorescence a panicle. Spikelets 2–10-flowered; glumes 2, usually unequal, the lower 1–3-nerved, the upper 3-nerved, persistent; lemma 5-nerved, obtuse, often ciliate or erose at apex; palea subequal to lemma.
About 80 species (although species concepts vary), mostly from damp, saline areas in temperate regions of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres; 10 or 11 in Australia (4 naturalized), 4 in Victoria (2 naturalized).
