Slender tufted annual or perennial, culms erect, to 50(–70) cm high. Leaves pale green, glabrous; sheath often rather broad and loose; blade narrow, closely folded or inrolled, to 30 cm long and 1 mm wide; ligule blunt, 1–4 mm long. Inflorescence sparse and very open at maturity, to 25 cm long, 30 cm wide. Spikelets 3–10-fIowered, 4–8 mm long; lower glume 1–2 mm long; upper glume 2–3 mm long; lemma 2–3.5 mm long; palea subequal to lemma; anthers 0.5–1 mm long..

MuM, Wim, GleP, VVP, VRiv, GipP, OtP, WaP, Gold, CVU, DunT, HSF, HNF. Mainly fringing saltmarsh communities around inland salt lakes (e.g. Lakes Corangamite, Beeac, Goldsmith and Natimuk), with an easterly outlier at Lake Omeo, Benambra. Rather rare in coastal situations (e.g. Port Fairy, Avalon, Pt Cook).
