Perennials. Leaf-blades folded to flat; ligules membranous. Inflorescence a panicle with erect or spreading branches, the spikelets densely clustered along one side of each branch. Spikelets laterally compressed, 2–5-flowered; glumes subequal, keeled, the lower 1-nerved, the upper 3-nerved; lemma 5-nerved, mucronate or shortly awned, exceeding glumes; palea subequal to lemma.
5 species, from temperate Eurasia; 1 species naturalised in Australia.
