Bulbous perennial herbs. Bulbs tunicate, ovoid or globose, sometimes with long neck. Leaves perennial or annual, basal, linear, sheathing at base. Inflorescence 1-flowered, scapose; spathe tubular. Flowers bisexual, pedicellate, erect; perianth funnel-shaped, segments free or fused near base, spreading above; stamens 6, fused at base of perianth, equal or at 2 levels, filaments filiform, anthers dorsifixed, dehiscing introrsely; ovary inferior, 3-locular, ovules few to many per locule; style filiform, stigma capitate or 3-lobed. Fruit a capsule; seeds few to numerous, flat, D-shaped, black.
About 40 species from warmer regions of North and South America, and the West Indies; 4 species naturalised in Australia, 1 in Victoria.
