Annuals. Leaves flat or convolute; ligule membranous. Inflorescence a slender spike, disarticulating below each spikelet at maturity. Spikelets 1-flowered, sunk in recesses along rachis; glumes 2, inserted side by side and covering recess except at anthesis, strongly veined, firm; lemma membranous, shorter than glumes, inserted side-on to rachis, 3-nerved, the lateral nerves very short.
6 species, mostly of saline areas from western Europe to India; 2 species naturalised in Australia and Victoria.
