Annual herb, unbranched or with short, prostrate branches. Leaves 2- or 3-pinnatisect, 3–12 cm long, hairy. Capitula globose, c. 6–10 mm diam. in fruit and commonly forming conspicuous burr-like clusters at the bases of plants. Cypsela body 1.8–2.5 mm long, brown, cottony at the apex and with spinescent stylar apices 1.5–2 mm long; lateral wings rounded apically, with conspicuous horizontal ridges for c. two-thirds their length, the upper third smooth Flowers c. Jun.–Jan.
VRiv, MSB, MuF, OtP, Strz. Also naturalised SA, Qld, NSW. Native to South America. Apparently relatively recently established in Victoria and first noted here in 1979 (but recorded at Sydney in 1802). Recorded for Victoria in the northeast along the Murray River and in the Strzelecki Ranges.
