Two varieties are known. The type variety, with pale blue to mauve ligules, is restricted to South Australia. See profile under B. dichromosomatica var. alba.
The species, along with a handful of other species in Asteraceae, Poaceae, Asparagaceae and Cyperaceae, has just two pairs of chromosomes, the smallest number known in the plant kingdom.
