Tufted or rhizomatous annuals or perennials. Leaves flat or inrolled. Inflorescence a panicle. Spikelets mostly 2–5-flowered; glumes paired, persistent, keeled, usually unequal; lemma 5-nerved, bifid near apex, the 2 lobes sometimes setiform, dorsal awn inserted in upper half of lemma; palea 2-nerved, not or hardly enclosed by lemma.

About 75 species, cosmopolitan; 2 in Australia (1 naturalized), 1 native in Victoria.
