Trisetum spicatum subsp. spicatum occurs in arctic and alpine areas of the Northern Hemispheres. Only Trisetum spicatum subsp. australiense occurs in Australia. See profile under that name.
Throughout its range it is a variable species (as it is in Victoria) and infraspecific elements are not recognised by some authorities.
