GipP, CVU, HSF, Strz. Occurs in wet and damp forest on southern slopes of the Dividing Range from Mount Macedon to Drouin, with isolated records from Mount Buangor and the Strzelecki Ranges.
Intergrades with O. lirata have occasionally been observed where these two species co-occur in the Beenak – Warburton area. Leaf shape, texture, and colour, and capitula size resemble that of O. lirata, but plant habit (low spindly shrubs) and inflorescence structure (small corymbs) are more like that of O. rugosa. Hair morphology is somewhat intermediate between the two species - ie. the upper leaf surface has hairs on small narrow tubercles.
