Pomax umbellata
(Gaertn.) Sol. ex A.Rich. PomaxErect or ascending subshrub to 40 cm high, usually much-branched near base; stems terete, pubescent. Leaves ovate to lanceolate, 4–30 mm long, 2–13 mm wide, acute, surfaces glabrous to hairy, margins recurved; petiole 1–10 mm long. Inflorescence usually terminal; peduncles of flower-like heads 5–12 mm long, c. as long as subtending leaves, hirsute, elongating in fruit. Flowers surrounded by a calyx-like cup 1.5–2 mm long, accrescent in fruit; calyx-lobes variable in size; corolla 2–3 mm long, papillate to hairy outside. Capsules obconical, to c. 4 mm long; seeds compressed-ovoid, 2–3 mm long, rugose, covered with many small white aggregates of hairs. Flowers Aug.–Nov.
VRiv, GipP, Gold, CVU, EGL, EGU, HSF, HNF, MonT, HFE, VAlp. Also WA, NT, SA, Qld, NSW, ACT. Scattered in mostly drier, often rocky, habitats of eastern Victoria with isolated western records for the Brisbane Ranges and Castlemaine areas.
