Inflorescence laterally flattened and spike-like, terminal; each flower within distichous, closely imbricate glume-like bracts (hence, inflorescence superficially similar to that of some Cyperus species); bracts hairy; male flowers at the base of the inflorescence, female flowers inserted distally. Male flowers surrounded by hyaline secondary bracts. Female flowers with a secondary bract present (A. pumilio) or absent (A. gracilis)
