Tufted, rhizomatous or stoloniferous perennials. Leaf-blades flat; ligule a fringed membrane. Inflorescence a spike or spike-like raceme or a panicle of several racemes; axis corky, breaking at maturity into several short segments. Spikelets embedded in the axis; lower glume reduced; upper glume subequal to the male or neuter lower floret; upper floret bisexual.
7 species occurring in tropical and near-tropical areas; 2 species in Australia (1 naturalized), 1 in Victoria (naturalized).
