Amaryllis
Bulbous perennial herbs. Leaves annual, several, broadly linear, distichous, absent at flowering-time. Inflorescence an umbel terminating the leafless scape, enclosed in bud by a spathe of 2 broad papery bracts. Flowers bisexual, funnel-shaped, often slightly zygomorphic, pedicellate, fragrant; perianth segments fused at base; stamens 6, filaments filiform, anthers dorsifixed, dehiscing introrsely; ovary inferior, 3-locular; ovules many per locule; style filiform, stigma 3-lobed. Fruit an irregularly dehiscent fleshy capsule; seeds few, ovoid, green to pink.
A monotypic South African genus.
