Native to southern and western Europe and North Africa. A common weed of crops and road-verges, usually on relatively fertile ground, almost throughout lowland Victoria.
The name S. horminoides has been applied to plants with short, almost equal-lipped corollas that are white-dotted at the base of the lower lip. Many Victorian specimens have these characteristics.
