More than 30 taxa distributed in northern Africa, throughout Europe and to central Asia have been included within Allium paniculatum. Under this broad concept Allium paniculatum is both morphologically and cytologically variable. However, there has been a trend of recognising these taxa as separate species and it has been proposed that Allium paniculatum is native to only Ukrain and Russia and is diploid (Salmeri et al. 2016).
